Kidney Stones Pass on Their Own Through the Ureter

Can Kidney Stones Pass on Their Own?

Can a kidney stone pass without surgery? Yes, but its size and location matter.

Once a stone enters the ureter—the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder—stones smaller than 5 millimetres often pass naturally within a few weeks.

Stones between 5 and 10 millimetres are less likely to pass, while larger stones usually need treatment.

While waiting, stay hydrated and take medication as your doctor advises.

Waiting should always involve medical follow-up to ensure your kidney remains safe.

If you develop fever, chills, or pain that medication cannot control, seek urgent medical care.

And remember: even if the pain disappears, follow-up may still be needed to confirm the stone has passed.
