Doctors extract large kidney stone from 180kg man

A 50-year-old man weighing 180kg had a big kidney stone removed through minimally invasive surgery at Dubai Hospital after living with it for more than three years of intense pain and discomfort.

Umar, a Dubai resident, had been carrying a huge stone in his kidney for the past few years. He had approached several hospitals in different countries, but due to the challenges of the operation caused by his morbid obesity, the removal procedure was refused by doctors and he was told to lose weight before any surgery to reduce the highrisk factor.

However, he was unable to lose the weight and his kidney stone grew to about 7cm in diameter. What was worse was that the stone was shaped like the antlers of a deer, and occupied most of the 10cm space in his left kidney. Umar experienced continuous pain on his left side and recurrent urinary tract infections caused by the stone, which had a huge negative impact on his quality of life.

He was referred to the Urology Department at Dubai Hospital, where thorough examinations and preparations were conducted by the urology, cardiology and anesthesiology teams, which decided the best course of treatment for Umar’s deteriorating health condition was to have the stone removed through a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

Dr Fariborz Bagheri, consultant urologist at Dubai Hospital, who led the operation, said: “Umar was kept in a prone position and through a one centimetre incision into his body, the big stone was fragmented into pieces and completely removed by the Urology team. The procedure took two hours, and he was discharged in good condition three days after the operation,”

Dr Bagheri has over 30 years of experience in the field of Urology. He and his team have successfully removed kidney stones in morbidly obese patients over the years using minimally invasive procedures.

Dr Maryam Al Rayssi, CEO of Dubai Hospital, said: “Advanced minimally invasive procedures are challenging operations which need expertise, precision, skill and advanced innovative technologies.

“Our highly-qualified and skilled surgeons, combined with up-to-date technologies for the management of all types of challenging kidney and urinary tract stones led to the success of this complicated case.”
