Video 207: How Are Kidney Stones Diagnosed? | Kidney Stone Diagnosis

Kidney Stone Diagnosis Using Ultrasound and CT Scan Imaging

How do we diagnose kidney stones?

The first clue may be your symptoms, such as pain in the side or back, nausea, or changes in urination.

If we suspect a kidney stone, we may request a urine test, a blood test and imaging.

An ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder is often used first. It can help identify some stones and show whether urine flow is blocked.

For a more detailed assessment, a CT scan, usually without contrast, may be recommended. It can show the size and location of the stone and help us plan the right treatment.
