ختنه باید توسط یک پزشک متخصص و تحت شرایط استریل انجام شود؛ انواع مختلفی از تکنیک‌های ختنه وجود دارد.
نوع تکنیک باید بر اساس سن بیمار و ترجیح پزشک انتخاب شود.
برای نوزادان و شیرخواران می‌توان از انواع مختلف گیره یا منگنه استفاده کرد.
برخی از والدین و پزشکان ممکن است پلاستیبل را ترجیح دهند.
پلاستیبل حلقه‌ای است که روی پوست ختنه گاه بسته می‌شود و پس از ۷ تا ۱۰ روز خود به خود می‌افتد.
در بزرگسالان و کودکان و برخی از نوزادان، از تکنیک استاندارد استفاده می‌کنیم که در آن پوست ختنه‌گاه را برش می‌دهیم، پوست را برمی‌داریم و دو لبه را با چند بخیه به هم وصل می‌کنیم.
صرف نظر از تکنیک ختنه، اگر توسط یک پزشک متخصص و در شرایط استریل انجام شود، نتیجه کلی یکسان است.
